Guilty Pleasures

With the seriousness and stress of day to day life, it is an important thing to allow oneself guilty pleasures. Those things that we may not want to readily admit to everyone, but regardless, they entertain us, whether they are tv shows, movies, or some particular activity. So, in an extension of revelations in the blog tagging post, here are some of my guilty pleasures.

Audiobooks
TwilightHarry Potter

I love listening to the Twilight series and Harry Potter audio books. I also downloaded the soundtrack to Twilight just to hear “Bella’s Lullaby”, and inadvertently got myself addicted to another song on the soundtrack, “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse.

And for those of you who say you would rather watch the movies, I won’t argue with you. I just look at it this way. Instead of enjoying the story for only two hours and having to wait until next year for the next part, I can enjoy the audiobooks for many hours, get the full story instead of an abbreviated version, imagine my own characters, and continue on to hear the rest of the series.

I am somewhat addicted to magazines. It started with celebrity tabloids, then fashion magazines. I have since migrated to yoga, photography, Asian pop culture, and British web design magazines.

When I am out shopping, I like to try on formal dresses and gowns. Especially the big, poofy ones. So needless to say, I am going to have a ball when I go shopping for my wedding dress!

Say It, Right Now

Do you ever have times when you think about calling someone just to say hello? Maybe you have an online friend that you want to write a message. But something comes up, or too little time becomes a factor, and you never say what you want to them.

Now is the time to change that. I know it has been said many, many times before in one form or the other, but you never know how long you will really have to tell someone what you want to tell them.

My mind was wandering a bit today, and I found myself thinking about something that happened last year. I was Myspace buddies with an old friend from high school. She had recently updated her photos, and I was taking a quick peek through them. I wanted to post some comments about what a lovely family she had, how cute her daughter looked holding their pet kitty, how pretty she looked in her wedding photo, and so on. But I was at work, and I was low on time. So I figured I would just come back later and add those comments.

As most “to do” items go, one thing led to another, and it slipped my mind that I wanted to re-visit her profile and comment. About two days later, I received an email from someone else in our graduating class – that my friend had committed suicide.

So do I think the little comments I wanted to make on her profile but never got around to would have made a significant difference? It is one of those “what if” questions that could drive a person mad if they let it. I would like to think that, maybe if I had, if nothing else she would have had a little reminder that there were many more people who cared.

No matter how young, happy, successful, hopeful, or loved a person seems to be, you cannot always guarantee that they will always be around, whether it is by accident or choice. Take that moment, right now, whether by phone, text, e-mail, comment, twitter, plurk or poke. Even if it makes you late for a meeting or for dinner or whatever. One or two minutes spent here and there is not more regrettable more a lifetime of wishing you had just said what you wanted to. No matter how silly or simple or complicated you may think it is. You just never know.

Changing My Moving Perspective

This weekend, my fiancé and I began working on packing up my apartment so we could fully be moved in together, and finally stop paying double in rent, since we have been living with each other for the last 2 and a half months anyway.

I have been dreading the packing process, because of my past moving experiences, including the bad scenarios that led up to a lot of my moves, having a Uhaul catch on fire, losing all of my journals from through high school (because I had a stack of boxes that were trash, and a stack that needed to go in the truck, and my helpers threw away both stacks), and having a super rushed, messy packing process the last time I moved, although the move itself was ultimately the best thing I ever did, considering it’s how I met my fiancĂ©!

He, on the other hand, has had nothing but good experiences moving, and he made our first day of packing very fun. I really should not have expected less, considering how wonderfully we get along – he even makes days where I have migraines a treat with his pampering techniques.

So the moral of the story for me is that I have to let go of past experiences, and look at new ones with an open mind. I have been applying that in many other areas, but I still come across situations that I have to remind myself that history does not always have to repeat itself – especially under better circumstances and with the right people around.
